Homeschool Styles Explained
Short answer: A style is how lessons are delivered, not what is taught. Many families end up "eclectic," mixing styles by subject or child.
Traditional
A traditional approach uses textbooks, workbooks, tests and grade levels similar to a conventional school. Programs in our directory tagged this way: Abeka, Saxon Math (HMH), Seton Home Study School.
Classical
Classical education follows the trivium (grammar, logic and rhetoric stages), often with memorization, great books and Latin. Programs in our directory tagged this way: AmblesideOnline, Classical Conversations, Memoria Press.
Charlotte Mason
The Charlotte Mason approach uses living books, short lessons, narration, nature study and habit training. Programs in our directory tagged this way: AmblesideOnline, My Father's World, Heart of Dakota, Master Books.
Literature-Based
Literature-based programs teach history, reading and often other subjects through real books rather than textbooks alone. Programs in our directory tagged this way: Sonlight, My Father's World, The Good and the Beautiful, Brave Writer, Heart of Dakota.
Unit Study
Unit studies tie several subjects together around one theme, which works well for teaching siblings together. Programs in our directory tagged this way: My Father's World.
Waldorf-Inspired
Waldorf-inspired learning emphasizes art, movement, storytelling and a gentle pace in the early years. Programs in our directory tagged this way: Oak Meadow.
Mastery
A mastery approach has students finish one concept before moving on, rather than cycling back over topics (spiral). Programs in our directory tagged this way: Math-U-See, Singapore Math (Dimensions Math), Math Mammoth.
Online
Online delivery means lessons happen on a computer or tablet, which can reduce parent prep time. Programs in our directory tagged this way: Time4Learning, IXL (family membership), Alpha Omega Publications (AOP), Easy Peasy All-in-One Homeschool, Beast Academy, Miacademy, Starfall, CTCMath, Khan Academy.
Live Online Classes
Live classes run at scheduled times with a real teacher and classmates. Programs in our directory tagged this way: Outschool, Art of Problem Solving (AoPS), Stanford Online High School.
Eclectic
Eclectic homeschooling means choosing a different approach per subject or per child, for example a mastery math program plus a literature-based history core. It is common and perfectly valid. The quiz lets you pick "mix and match."
